Minor nitpick: 12 nautical miles is the territorial sea, but the contiguous zone extends to 24nm and coastal states retain enforcement rights there for customs, fiscal, immigration and sanitary matters (UNCLOS Art. 33). A clinical trial is arguably sanitary. You want to be at 24.1, not 12.1.

I sat on an IRB for eleven years. I read the protocol they linked. I want to be clear that I am horrified, and I also want to note that their consent form is four pages and readable, which is more than I ever got a sponsor to agree to on land.

This is the thing nobody wants to say out loud. The onshore process isn't optimized for participant safety either. It's optimized for defensibility. These people just removed the thing being defended against.

Postgres on the ship, logical replication when we have a link. Honestly the hardest part is that timestamps are ambiguous when nobody will confirm what time zone you're in.
